There is broad hands-on experience in the supervision and protection of intensive care unit (ICU) patients at TMC, accredited as it is by the Joint Commission International (JCI), with ample utilization of both non-invasive and invasive diagnostics and therapeutics. In the interest of both patient and trainee, the training program is structured under the guiding principle of graded responsibility for patient care (growing responsibility as the level of training increases) with appropriate faculty supervision. This critical patient care is also complemented by a well-structured medical house staff (medical residents).
The faculty comprises 8 internationally-trained intensivists, 2 of whom are contracted by the hospital to provide dedicated 24/7 ICU coverage. There is a lot of multi-subspecialty consultation and interaction with various top-notch specialists in cardiology, pulmonary medicine, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and various other fields of medicine.
The training program includes an excellent critical care medicine conference structure, including a core curriculum and various patient presentations. Trainees also attend the regular general medical conferences held by the Department of Medicine. There is ample time for a trainee's involvement in research under direct consultant guidance to meet the program's research requirements. All these provide for a comprehensive structured framework towards becoming a clinically competent intensive care specialist.
