Center for Endoscopy and Physiologic Studies

About Us

The Medical City’s Center for Endoscopy and Physiologic Studies (CEP) is an integral part of the hospital’s total health care system. It provides patient-focused services and an environment where training and research of its medical and nursing staff can be safely and effectively carried out. In particular, this unit provides specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services (i.e. bronchoscopy, cystourethroscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, etc.) for both in-patients and out-patients of various ages in a safe and comfortable facility.

The CEP team is a coordinated, highly specialized group trained in the skills necessary to achieve the optimum effective quality care to its patients.

This unit also serves as a clinical setting for medical resident trainees of The Medical City to gain experience. This is consistent with the training and educational function of the hospital which also provides a stimulus for continuing improvement and innovation.

Services

GASTROINTESTINAL ENDOSCOPY

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is an out-patient or in-patient procedure used to examine the inside of the digestive tract. This procedure is performed using an endoscope which is a flexible tube with a tiny TV camera at the end that displays a color image on a TV screen. The procedure allows for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.

Endoscopy may be performed for the upper gastrointestinal tract, small intestines and large intestines. The upper intestinal tract endoscopy is termed Gastroscopy, small intestinal endoscopy is called Enteroscopy and large intestinal endoscopy is called Colonoscopy. The instruments utilized for these procedures are called Gastroscope, Enteroscope and Colonoscope respectively.

Aside from diagnosing diseases using these procedures, therapeutic measures may also be done. Therapeutic measures may involve removal of polyps, arresting bleeding, coagulating lesions, clipping lesions, injection therapy and removal of mucosal abnormalities to name a few.

The Biliary system (gallbladder, hepatobiliary ducts, pancreas) may also be visualized using endoscopy. The procedure is called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography or ERCP for short. This procedure also uses an endoscope called Duodenoscope which may have diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. Removal of bile duct stones, identification of tumors and biopsy of lesions and stenting of strictures are some of the modalities this procedure can offer.

With the advancement of science and technology, newer endoscopes which offer other diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are also available. Ultrasound of the gastrointestinal tract may also be done via an endoscope. This is called Endoscopic Ultrasonography or EUS. This procedure is used to view submucosal lesions and assess extent of lesions with the capability for biopsy and therapy of lesions.
