Putting our patients on center-stage means that they receive care that is safe and free from harm. Safety for our patients and quality of our care are our utmost commitment.
Our mission is to make quality and safety an inherent part of the everyday lives of the people providing care at The Medical City. As such, we envision that our patients will likewise be mindful of this and seek out for themselves the indicators of quality and safety of our organization, and use this knowledge in their decisions to choose us for their health care needs.
The Medical City’s accreditation with the Joint Commission International (JCI) is a continuing program ensuring that we comply with the highest standards of quality and safety. Now on its 10th year of being accredited, we continue to maintain and sustain our adherence to the standards through various initiatives and quality improvement projects. Being internationally accredited means our patients receive the right care and treatment at the right time, delivered in a way that is respectful of their rights, cultural beliefs and spiritual inclinations.
In 2015, The Medical City was officially recognized as a Center of Excellence for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) Program in the Philippines by the ERAS Society of Sweden. As such, TMC is responsible for propagating and promoting the practice of ERAS nationwide.
ERAS is a multidisciplinary program that gives patients the option to choose less invasive surgical techniques and helps them get back on their feet faster after surgery by managing pain, fluid intake and diet. It also strives to make events in the hospital as normal as possible such as patients eat in a dining area, not in their beds, or walking in the corridor within 12 hours after surgery.
In March 2014, The Medical City became the first hospital in Asia and the Pacific Region to participate in the American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Collaborative Project (NSQIP).
NSQIP makes it possible for TMC to compare relevant information with other collaborating hospitals. The basic rationale is that transparent reporting and comparison of surgical outcomes between hospitals and surgeons result in deliberate and focused initiatives to improve. This results in a continuous cycle of quality improvement. With NSQIP, our patients undergoing surgery are assured of quality, evidence-based, safe care.
In 2015, The Medical City’s Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) Program was certified by the Joint Commission International. This means that the program meets international standards of quality and safety specific for AMI or heart attack patients. We believe that “Time is muscle” and that every minute counts after a patient experiences a heart attack. As such, a heart attack patient is assured that the blocked coronary artery shall be unblocked in our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory within 90 minutes of walking through the doors of our Emergency Department.

According to the Institute of Medicine (www.iom.org), quality in healthcare is characterized by being safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable. The various quality and safety initiatives of The Medical City are geared toward achieving these measures of quality.
We believe that one can only improve what one measures. Thus, The Medical City takes great effort to establish its data collection and monitoring systems to keep track of our quality and safety indicators. We believe that we should be transparent and should share our quality measures with our partners and patients because they, as the recipients of our care, are the best persons to know how these measures of quality can be further improved.
Healthcare-associated infections or HAIs are infections that patients develop during the course of their hospital stay. In TMC, HAIs are measured among those patients using mechanical ventilators to aid breathing, urinary catheters and intravenous lines that are close to the heart or in any of the great veins. When HAI rates are low, it means our healthcare providers follow safe practices (like proper hand washing) thus protecting our patients from undue illness.
We measure effectiveness of care by tracking selected patient outcomes. One is acute care mortality rate and the other is readmission rate. Acute care mortality demonstrates the survival of our patients while receiving intensive care. Readmission, on the other hand, is an important indicator for hospitals because it could be a sign of premature discharge, inadequate care, or poor patient adherence to the care regimen. Readmission is defined as admission within 30 days of discharge from the patient’s primary condition.
Efficient care means that our patients undergo tests and receive treatment appropriate to their illness thus minimizing waste. Efficient care is based on current evidence which are results of various researches. The Medical City ensures efficient care by adapting and integrating such evidence-based practices into our care systems and by tracking how well our providers adhere to these practices.
We measure the overall experience of patients admitted to the hospital and the overall satisfaction of patients who sought care from our outpatient units. These measures are expressed by the percent of respondents who gave us a the best score in a 10-point scale for experience and 4-point scale for satisfaction.
In 2015, The Medical City released the Quality and Safety Report 2014, the hospital’s very first publication on its quality and safety measures. The report is TMC’s testament to the dedication and hard work of the staff in order to meet, maintain and sustain its goals for quality and safety.
