LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery that corrects common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It involves using a laser to reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye, to improve how light is focused on the retina. This results in clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
LASIK creates a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium. The laser then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct any refractive errors and improve vision. The flap is then placed back in its original position, acting as a natural bandage for the eye. The entire procedure only takes about 15 minutes per eye and is typically painless.
LASIK is primarily used to correct Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and Astigmatism. These are all common refractive errors that occur when the shape of the eye does not bend or focus light properly, resulting in blurry vision. LASIK can also be used to correct presbyopia, a condition where people have difficulty focusing on close objects as they age.
Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK surgery. Your eye doctor will evaluate your overall eye health and determine if you are a good candidate based on factors such as the thickness of your cornea, the severity of your refractive error, and any other potential risks or complications. Some people may not be suitable candidates due to certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors that could affect healing after surgery.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications with LASIK. These can include dry eyes, infection, overcorrection or undercorrection of vision, and glare or halos around lights. However, the majority of people who undergo LASIK have successful outcomes with no major complications. It is important to discuss any concerns with your eye doctor before deciding if LASIK is right for you.
Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK surgery in the Philippines. Generally, those at least 18 years old with stable vision prescriptions and no underlying eye diseases or health conditions are considered good candidates for LASIK. A thorough eye examination and consultation with an experienced ophthalmologist are necessary to determine if LASIK is the right option for an individual.
If you are not a good candidate for LASIK, there are other options available to correct your vision. These may include other types of laser eye surgery, such as PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) or LASEK (Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis), which have similar outcomes but involve slightly different techniques. Other options include implantable contact lenses or refractive lens exchange, where the natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial one.
Before coming in for a post-operative check-up, it is important to follow any instructions given by your doctor or surgeon. This may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding certain activities or medications, and keeping the eye clean and protected. You should also have someone available to drive you to and from the appointment, as your vision may still be blurry after surgery.
LASIK eye surgery in the Philippines typically takes about 15 minutes per eye, but the entire process may take a few hours. This includes pre-operative preparations and post-operative monitoring. The actual laser treatment usually only takes a few seconds per eye, making it a quick and efficient procedure.
During the LASIK procedure, you will be asked to lie down on a comfortable bed in a reclined position. Your eye will be numbed with anesthetic drops and your surgeon will use a specialized instrument to hold your eyelids open. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort during the surgery, but it is generally not painful. The laser will then reshape your cornea and the flap will be replaced.
After the surgery, you may experience some mild discomfort or a foreign body sensation in your eye. This is normal and can be managed with prescribed pain medication or artificial tears. Your vision may also be blurry or hazy for the first few days as your eyes heal and adjust to the changes made during surgery. You will need to wear protective eye shields while sleeping for the first week or so to prevent any accidental rubbing or injury to the eye.
It may take a few days to weeks for your vision to fully stabilize after LASIK surgery. During this time, you will have post-operative check-ups with your doctor to monitor your progress and ensure that your eyes are healing properly.
The Medical City's LASIK Center proudly includes its Dry Eye Clinic, dedicated to addressing this multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface. Dry eye manifests symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear-film instability, potentially leading to eye damage. Given its diverse causes, a comprehensive evaluation is often necessary. Our clinic conducts common assessments such as Tear Breakup Time (TBUT) and Schirmer tests, while also offering advanced evaluations at the Dry Eye Clinic.
As one of the few comprehensive dry eye clinics in the country, our facility employs specialized machines capable of providing both qualitative and quantitative analyses of your tears, even at the molecular level. Using a high-resolution camera that captures both white and infrared light photos, we meticulously observe factors such as Meibomian gland dysfunction, tear film volume, and tear film stability through Non-Invasive Keratograph Break-Up Time (NIKBUT).
Dry eye can be a lifelong, inconvenient, and debilitating condition, but timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention can significantly improve your quality of life. Our dedicated team of experts at The Medical City's LASIK Center's Dry Eye Clinic is committed to providing personalized care and tailored treatment plans to help you manage and alleviate the symptoms of dry eye, ensuring your eye health and comfort.
