On September 14, The Medical City’s Department of Surgery, Section of Head and Neck Surgery hosted the much-anticipated Third Philippine Thermal Ablation Congress. Medical experts from differing disciplines convened to further develop their knowledge and hone their skills on this groundbreaking procedure.
Thermal ablation in the thyroid is a minimally invasive procedure used to address thyroid nodules, or lumps found in thyroid glands. While thyroid nodules may be benign and not need intervention, these lumps can grow and cause problems such as difficulty swallowing, discomfort or pressure, or swelling in the neck. In such cases, thermal ablation may be done to shrink these affected nodules, alleviating symptoms and preserving thyroid function without the need for a surgical in-patient procedure.
Dr. Ramon Santos Ocampo led the discussion on thyroid malignancies treated with thermal ablation.
At the heart of the congress was The Medical City's (TMC) commitment to education, featuring engaging lectures on thermal ablation and its significant role in the rapidly evolving medical landscape. Discussions ranged from the basic principles of the procedure to complex cases involving thyroid malignancies and ablation treatment. This event not only highlighted the procedure’s contributions to medical advancement but also underscored its potential to provide patients with a safe, comfortable outpatient option and a quicker recovery period.
A live patient demonstration was conducted by Dr. Rainier Lutanco to show participants the basic techniques of thyroid microwave ablation.
The Medical City’s Microwave Ablation team, Dr. Rainier Yu Lutanco, Dr. Michael Fontano, Dr. Christelle Anne Almanon, Dr. Ramon Santos Ocampo, Dr. Angeli Jeff Fabic, and Dr. Faye Michelle Gilbuena led the thermal ablation live patient demonstration and workshop. With the help of cutting-edge technology, the doctors exhibited their expertise in proper procedural preparations and various approaches to the procedure.
Through the microwave ablation workshop, Dr. Christelle Anne Almanon guided participants how to perform the procedure in the thyroid.
Incorporating theory with practice, the Third Philippine Thermal Ablation Congress and Workshop proved to be a success as the event concluded with a new record of successfully performing 10 ablation cases – the most done in a day, surpassing the record TMC has set the previous year.
Having successfully performed 40 thermal thyroid ablations this year, The Medical City continues to open possibilities and push the limits of thyroid treatment. Advancing towards excellence, TMC commits to providing high-level treatment and utmost care for its patients.
