Manila, Philippines — The Medical City Health Informatics and Technology Group (HITG), headed by Chief Informatics and Technology Officer Nelson M. Tiongson, welcomed delegates from the Mayapada Healthcare Group (headquartered in Indonesia) last 29th of May 2023 to share best practices on implementing hospital information systems (HIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
The Medical City Ortigas served as a reference site for exhibiting the Arcus Air Hospital Information System, which went live last July 2021 and has since expanded to support not only operational and management changes, but also cultural changes within the hospital. The implementation of the core HIS jump-started a digital transformation journey that steered the organization into being more strongly data-driven and accepting hospital-wide operational updates, despite its project execution phase coinciding with the early and frantic start of the pandemic.
Mr. Tiongson and his team were able to detail key learnings and challenges during each step of the implementation of Arcus Air, which invited further discussion with the Mayapada delegates regarding how a health tech solution like Arcus could work for or against their current infrastructure.
“Streamlined workflows, increased focus on patient-centered tasks for health professionals, and improved efficiency on data collection for both clinical and operational domains were some of the major values that has been the product of implementing HIS,” Mr. Tiongson explains.
After a morning of discussions with the HITG, the teams proceeded to visit key units within hospital operations throughout the patient journey. The site visits started with quick but warm conversations with The Medical City's leaders: Dr. Eugene F. Ramos, Enterprise Head and CEO, Dr. Ruben G. Kasala, Executive Vice President and CEO of TMC Ortigas, and Atty. Martin P. Samson, Chief Operating Officer of TMC Ortigas.
The HITG also emphasized that strong management support was one of the key factors in the success of the project implementation. A top-down approach in change management was employed, with the above key leaders at the forefront of the whole cultural transformation.
Dr. Ramos, as the leader of TMC Ortigas during the go-live of Arcus Air, highlighted how the Arcus Air HIS needed to serve the people using it — at the same time, changes in processes and management were crucial to supporting the implementation of these tools, in order to get the rest of the hospital community to adopt its use into their day-to-day operations.
The hospital tour continued throughout major patient touch points, starting from admission until they reached billing and cashiering. Leaders within these units were able to share their insights on how Arcus Air integrates with and impacts their daily processes: namely patient queueing, patient registration, clinical documentation, and patient management for nurses and doctors, administration and execution of orders and procedures, generation of the bill, up to receipt of payments.
As of May 2023, The Mayapada Healthcare Group is the third hospital delegation that made a reference visit to The Medical City regarding the implementation of HIS and EMR.
Knowledge-sharing site visits can be immensely beneficial for hospitals based in different regions, to help not just with their medical advancement, but with finding better solutions for operational efficiency and end-to-end healthcare delivery. The Medical City continues to invite, visit, and partner with institutions from around the globe to make sure its vision and mission of delivering excellent and compassionate healthcare to patient partners across its entire network are achieved.
The Medical City HITG welcomes all inquiries from guests and professionals who would like to learn more about the hospital’s digital transformation journey. To schedule a formal site visit or a learning session, you may send a request letter to hitg@themedicalcity.com.
