Pasig, Philippines — The Medical City (TMC) won the Excellence Award for Best in Community Involvement at the Hospital Management Asia Awards (HMA) on August 29, 2024, in Bali, Indonesia. This prestigious honor recognizes best practices in Asia’s hospitals. TMC’s initiative, ‘Hope Mobi-Clinic: Driving Early Cancer Detection with Wheels of Hope,’ was specifically acknowledged for its impactful and innovative approach to enhancing health and wellbeing.
The Hope Mobi Clinic, in alignment with Augusto P. Sarmiento Cancer Institute’s (APSCI) SCReen And Prevent Cancer Program (SCRAP), offers free breast cancer screening to women aged 50 to 65 years old in San Juan and Pasig City who have no prior history of cancer or tumors. This initiative doesn’t stop at screening; if a malignant tumor is detected, The Medical City and AIA Philippines will cover the medical costs associated with treatment, including surgery if necessary.
The Excellence Award for Best in Community Involvement celebrates the innovative approach of the Hope Mobi Clinic and its profound impact on the communities it serves. The program, aptly named ‘Hope Mobi-Clinic: Driving Early Cancer Detection with Wheels of Hope,’ has reached over 900 women in underserved areas, exemplifying the power of compassionate healthcare delivered directly to those in need.
Dr. Tiangco, director of APSCI, expressed her optimism and commitment. “As Filipinos’ partner in health, TMC's goal in offering Hope Mobi Clinic is to give access to early cancer detection to otherwise healthy women who are at higher risk than the general population in developing breast cancer—one of the most common cancers in the Philippines, in Asia, and in the world. By detecting breast cancer early, and subsequently undergoing surgical treatment, women of San Juan and Pasig can be saved from this dreaded disease and go on to lead healthy and cancer-free lives for years to come,” said Dr. Tiangco.
Since its launch, the Hope Mobi Clinic has screened 913 women, with 13 cases revealing suspicious masses. These patients have been referred to The Medical City for further evaluation and care. The clinic is actively monitoring the progress of 4 patients who underwent surgery, providing continuous support and guidance through their recovery journeys.
The Hope Mobi Clinic’s contributions extend beyond breast cancer screening. As the first mobile facility in the country capable of performing digital mammography, it also plays a crucial role in health education. The initiative has provided health literacy training to 190 local healthcare workers in San Juan and Pasig, empowering them to assist in evaluating residents for free breast cancer screening.
The Medical City's ongoing commitment to community health underscores a broader vision: a future where every woman has access to early cancer detection and comprehensive care, paving the way for healthier lives and brighter futures.
