PROGRAM OVERVIEW OF PULMONARY RELIEF
PHASE 1: Pre-admission Evaluation

Upon a doctor's referral, a patient will be assessed by a physician who specializes in pulmonary
medicine.  If found to be appropriate for admission into the program, the Rehabilitation team will evaluate the patient's current level of function and design an individualized program to meet the needs of the patient.

PHASE 2: Education

The patient participates twice a week in education activities, progressive exercise programs and support group. A dietician assesses the patient's eating habits and guides him to a healthy eating plan. Sessions will help the patient quit smoking, relearn proper breathing techniques to control breathlessness, and learn about the medications used for COPD.

PHASE 3: Exercise

Exercise program will begin at a level based on each patient's ability. It will start slowly and progressively each week towards the patient's goal. It will consist of aerobic conditioning activities such as paced walking, bicycling and other exercises to improve strength and endurance of both upper and lower body muscle groups.

PHASE 4: Follow-up

The home exercise program is for those who already completed the sessions. It includes walking, relaxation techniques as well as proper nutrition. The patients are advised to see their referring physician regularly for further medical supervision. Advices on flu and pneumonia vaccination are given to reduce the risk of future lung infection.
