The Medical City Earns the Philippines Its First 5-star Rating in Stroke Care

TMC’s achievement of earning the Philippines its first 5-star rating in stroke care not only signifies a new standard in saving lives but also highlights its unwavering commitment to excellence--continuously innovating and progressing in meeting the healthcare needs of patients, ensuring they receive the quality care they deserve.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of adult-onset disability in the Philippines and it continues to affect the health of Filipinos aged 50 and above.

The Medical City (TMC) has set a new standard in life-saving efforts by earning a distinguished 5-star rating for performing Mechanical Thrombectomy in the country.

The coveted rating was bestowed upon TMC by the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) as part of their Mission Thrombectomy 2020+ campaign. The campaign aims to recognize institutions that demonstrate outstanding performance in delivering timely and effective Mechanical Thrombectomy procedures to stroke patients.

Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) is a minimally invasive emergency surgery that has been the new standard of care for the acute treatment of moderate to severe stroke. It is a life-saving procedure that involves the removal of blood clots from blocked arteries in the brain, restoring blood flow, and minimizing potential brain damage.

When it comes to stroke care, time is of the essence, and the institution's quick and effective care plays a crucial role in saving lives and ensuring better patient outcomes.

Dr. Erwin Jocson, an Interventional Neuroradiologist, and his highly specialized team of neurologists and neurocritical care specialists have played an instrumental role in this achievement.

Dr. Jocson reflects on the challenging journey leading to this victory. "In 2016, I would give lectures to other hospitals about stroke interventional management, but nobody would care to listen. Some colleagues deemed it 'impossible' to achieve in our developing country. Now, six years later, the landscape has transformed, and our brand stands as a testament to our exceptional capabilities."

This accolade goes beyond the individual efforts of its exceptional professionals. The collaborative approach of the brain attack team, working in synergy with other clinical services to address patient comorbidities, has significantly enhanced the quality of care. Furthermore, the dedicated rehabilitation specialists and ward staff have ensured a holistic approach to patient management and rehabilitation, setting a new benchmark for treating stroke patients.
