Manila, Philippines: Adopting a proper diet can go a long way in keeping our bones strong and healthy. This was the main theme of Bone Appetit, the second episode in The Medical City’s (TMC) Guilt-Free Gourmet (GFG) series. The show was composed of cooking demos for delicious, “good-to-the-bone” dishes, as well as discussions and Q&As on orthopedic health.
Guest chefs courtesy of co-presenter Del Monte Philippines prepared Baked White Macaroni, Chicken Carrot Spaghetti, and Tomato and Cheese with Hotdogs, while a TMC nutritionist helped explain how these can help fortify bone strength and density. Guest experts from TMC, a TMC patient-partner, and the live audience also participated in an interactive discussion regarding common orthopedic ailments such as osteoporosis and arthritis.
“Filipinos know how to enjoy a good meal, and there’s no reason why we can’t savor great food while promoting good health. Taking care of our bones should start early in life; we need to move away from the misplaced notion that only the ageing members of our society should be concerned about bone health,“ said Dr. Rafael S. Claudio, Chairman of TMC’s Orthopedic Multi-Specialty Center.
“It seems the best way to people’s hearts and minds is through their stomachs. We received very positive feedback from our audience for our first GFG episode, which focused on heart diseases. People enjoyed discovering ways to keep their hearts healthy through delicious and affordable meals, so we decided to continue this healthy food concept and correlated it to preventing early bone deterioration,” added TMC nutritionist Carol Q. Hernandez.
Apart from samples of the featured dishes, participants were also offered free medical services such as bone scanning, blood pressure checks, and nutritional consultation. Information materials and other freebies were given to early bird registrants, and special prizes were awarded during a raffle held after the forum.
Aligned with TMC’s patient-partnership philosophy, wherein physicians and patients are equal partners in the journey to health and wellness, TMC’s GFG series aims to empower the public with reliable medical information so they can better engage their doctors when determining the best health strategy for their needs.
