Abdominoplasty popularly known as “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat in the abdomen usually caused by pregnancy or weight gain. Abdominoplasty can also be performed to hide a vertical midline abdominal scar or remove striated abdominal skin.
What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty popularly known as “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat in the abdomen usually caused by pregnancy or weight gain. Abdominoplasty can also be performed to hide a vertical midline abdominal scar or remove striated abdominal skin.
How is the procedure done?
In the aesthetic operating room, the patient is first anesthetized and monitored by a fully trained anesthesiologist. The patient feels no pain during the surgery. The abdomen is then marked for symmetry, after which the excess skin and fat is removed. A cut is then made around the umbilicus or “belly button” which will be relocated on the reshaped abdomen. When that is done, the abdominal muscles are sewn together to help contour the abdomen. To finish the procedure, the incisions are closed and positioned to be hidden by the patient’s underwear or swimwear.
How long does the procedure take?
An abdominoplasty usually takes three to four hours.
What happens after the procedure?
An abdominal binder is applied to the patient after the operation. A day after the surgery, the patient is encouraged to sit up and walk around the room. Depending on the situation, suction drains may be placed during the operation to provide an outlet for any excess fluids. The abdomen will be swollen for several weeks and will be followed by a gradual decrease in the size and the appearance of new contours in several months.
What are the possible risks and complications of the procedure?
No surgical procedure is without risks. Hematoma or bruising, post-operative bleeding, infection and scarring are the most common risks. Vascular compromise of the abdominal flap, asymmetry, and umbilical deformities, though, are rare.
