What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast Augmentation or breast enlargement surgery is a surgical procedure which aims to increase the size of a woman’s breasts.

Since time immemorial, a woman’s breast has represented her femininity and ability to nurture. With today’s trends heavily influenced by movies, TV, and fashion magazines, there has been an increase in the demand for breast augmentation.

What happens before the procedure?

During consultation, the patient expresses her desired size increase. Several measurements are taken by the aesthetic surgeon which are the basis in deciding the size of the breast implants to be used.

How is the procedure done?

Breast augmentation is performed by inserting a silicone gel filled breast implant under the patient’s breast tissue or chest muscles while the patient is under general anesthesia. Breast augmentation is performed in the Aesthetic Operating Room to increase safety and minimize infection.

There are several choices for the surgical incision: underneath the breast, around the areola or on a fold in the armpit. Breast augmentation usually takes two to three hours.

After the operation, a surgical dressing or elastic bandage is applied to the breasts to maintain the position of the implants and minimize any discomfort. Post-operative pain medications are prescribed for any discomfort.

What are the possible risks and complications of the procedure?

Breast augmentation, as in any surgical procedure, carries some risk. Post-operative bleeding, infection, asymmetry or scarring may occur and this may entail a return to the operating room. The hardening of the tissue surrounding the breast implant (breast capsule contractures) may occur over time and may need surgical intervention. Sensory changes (loss of sensation or feeling numb) over the breast may be noted and this can either be temporary or permanent. Silicone gel filled implants may fail over time and need replacement.
