Dr. John Kevin Alonzo Selected as Young Executive Leader for the 2024 IHF World Hospital Congress
MANILA, PHILIPPINES—The Medical City (TMC) has been recognized as a finalist and given an Honourable Mention for the American Hospital Association Excellence Award for Healthcare Workers’ Wellbeing at the prestigious International Hospital Federation (IHF) Awards 2024. This accolade highlights TMC’s exceptional efforts in ensuring the sustainability and wellbeing of healthcare workers through its Holistic Wellbeing for TMCitizens: Employee and Physician Engagement initiative.
This initiative, launched in response to the challenges brought about by the pandemic, focused on addressing burnout among healthcare workers and improving retention rates. From 2021 to 2024, TMC implemented a comprehensive range of programs, including annual medical check-ups, vaccine programs, medical service benefits, and mental health support. The hospital also introduced physical wellness programs, such as the rebranded Fitness Innovative Training in the City (FIT City), which offers personalized fitness plans for employees and doctors as a preventive health measure.
TMC’s focus on staff wellbeing markedly improved retention rates, increasing from 76.6% in 2022 to 95.8% in 2023. The program also supported career advancement for employees, with continued recognition of long-serving staff members who have dedicated 10 to 25 years of service.
The award was presented at the 47th IHF World Hospital Congress from September 10 to 12, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This global event brought together over 500 healthcare leaders worldwide to celebrate innovation and excellence in healthcare delivery. TMC’s recognition reaffirms its dedication to providing exceptional patient care and creating a sustainable and nurturing work environment for its staff.
In addition to this recognition, The Medical City’s Dr. John Kevin Alonzo was chosen to be part of the International Hospital Federation’s (IHF) prestigious Young Executive Leaders (YEL) Program. As one of 47 individuals selected from 251 applicants representing 32 countries, Dr. Alonzo is also one of only two Filipinos chosen to represent the country. He was also one of 4 graduates chosen to present his individual output during the first plenary session of the congress, entitled Generational Leadership Shift: Navigating New Challenges, Shaping Better Futures.
