Dr. Victor Jocson Pioneers Stroke Care at The Medical City

For The Medical City (TMC) doctors, every patient is a reason to push the limits of modern medicine. As an interventional neuroradiologist at TMC, Dr. Victor Erwin Jocson is one of the country’s few specialists trained in performing mechanical thrombectomy—a minimally invasive but highly complex procedure that can reverse the effects of stroke within hours.

With the well-being of his patients in mind, he continues to transform how interventional neuroradiology should be delivered to Filipinos. In recognition of his impact, Dr. Jocson was recently honored with the 2025 Manila Bulletin Newsmaker of the Year Award, a distinction given to individuals whose efforts inspire and advance public well-being.

Dr. Jocson is also behind the first 16 groundbreaking procedures for interventional neuroradiology and body interventional radiology in the country, including the Philippines' inaugural subdural hemorrhage embolization in 2022.

One of the most talked-about examples of Dr. Jocson’s expertise was the successful thrombectomy performed on a 105-year-old stroke patient—a delicate case that demonstrated both the technical skill and deep clinical judgment required in such time-critical interventions. The successful procedure marks the patient as the oldest recorded recipient of a mechanical thrombectomy. While the patient later passed due to natural causes, the procedure itself was a medical breakthrough, showing that advanced care can be safely and effectively extended even to the most elderly patients.

But Dr. Jocson’s true legacy lies in his dedication to making world-class care available and accessible. He has performed over 60 thrombectomies since 2020, giving stroke patients a second chance at life and recovery. With stroke remaining a leading cause of disability and death in the Philippines, his work has changed outcomes for countless families.

At The Medical City, that mindset is the standard—not the exception. Doctors like Dr. Jocson are proof that the hospital’s strength lies not just in its technology or facilities, but in the people who power them. Stories like this affirm that excellence is a choice—one that The Medical City’s physicians make every single day.
