The Medical City Ortigas’ Center for Liver Health and Transplantation stands as the country’s most active pediatric liver transplant program, with an impressive track record of successfully performing 15 pediatric liver transplants. Recognizing its expertise, the Philippine government identified TMC as a key partner in the Pediatric Access to Liver Transplant (PAsLiT) Program, in collaboration with the Department of Health and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
Jennifer Visto, a mother of four from Antipolo, first noticed her newborn daughter Gianna’s yellowish skin at just two weeks old. Initially suspected of having G6PD deficiency, further tests revealed that Gianna had biliary atresia, a rare liver disease that blocks the bile ducts. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Jennifer sought answers and connected with other parents online. At three months old, Gianna underwent the Kasai procedure, but the need for a liver transplant remained.
Thanks to the PAsLiT Program, Gianna received her liver transplant in February 2024, with Jennifer herself as the donor. The successful surgery, performed at TMC, gave Gianna a new lease on life. Jennifer expressed profound gratitude to the PAsLiT Program, TMC, and the Filipino people, whose tax-funded support made the life-saving operation possible. She was overwhelmed with joy, looking forward to Gianna’s healthy future.
As the preferred medical facility for the PAsLiT Program, TMC provides world-class liver transplant services, particularly for pediatric patients, eliminating the need for Filipino families to go abroad to receive such treatment. Gianna Visto became the second child treated under the program since its inception in 2020.
TMC’s expertise highlights its commitment to providing critical care for children suffering from liver diseases, continuing to bring hope to the youth who will shape our futures.
About TMC’s Center for Liver Health and Transplantation (CLHT)
TMC’s CLHT was established in 2008. Guided by its innovative equipment and multi-specialty group of healthcare professionals, it has successfully operated 15 pediatric patients and 10 adult patients. Dr. Vanessa de Villa, a hepatobiliary surgeon, and a pioneering liver transplant specialist, championed the first successful pediatric liver transplantation surgery in 2011.
